I’d take Jaivian over Jai’Den. Cal could easily have gotten over a thousand yards from Jaivian in 2024 if not for the stubborn and incorrect belief that Ott still had the juice needed to excel after his injury. There is a reason UCLA pursued Jaivian over Jai’Den. Sure, he’s sharing the load with two other outstanding Bruin RB’s, but IMO he briings an exceptional burst element I haven’t seen from Jai’Den. Jaivian runs with a determination and ruggedness that belies his size. Oakland strong.

Jaivian had a great year at Cal, but he hasn't been the same since he left. He hasn't had any explosive runs since joining UCLA.

I have seen a few, some at key moments for UCLA.

Wow, amazing stat - Cal will have faced all of the 5-star quarterbacks from the class of 2023 except for #1 Arch. Our defense should be up to the test, but I still have concerns about our offense; we need to simplify things. UNLV is good, a little too good for a non-conference game; we shouldn't take them lightly.

I await with bated breath....thanks

Nice work Christopher. I think the Cal defense will be up to the task of keeping this offense from scoring a bunch of points if they are not on the field two thirds of the freaking game and tackle better than they have been.

I’m also gunna need a cal offensive preview not sure who’s calling plays this weekend

Tosh wouldn't commit to that in the presser, but said it was unacceptable that our defense has scored as much against recent P4 teams as our offense and that they're making big changes to spark the offense since it doesn't have the WoW improvements that the defense is seeing. We'll see how much of it is talk.

Cal's offensive preview should be one paragraph

As a Jerry Tarkanian fan, was always interested in the Runnin' Rebels nickname. Neither the Rebels nickname nor 'Hey Reb!' had an explicit Confederate connection. The original Rebel nickname (1954) predated the short-lived Confederate imagery (dropped by the mid-1970s), and Hey Reb! was intentionally designed as a Western figure.

Historical context: During the Civil War, Nevada recruited roughly 1,200 men into the Union Army, forming the Nevada Volunteer Cavalry and infantry units.

UNLV briefly adopted Confederate visual tropes....but not because they were Confederate sympathizers. The first official mascot was Beauregard, a cartoon wolf named after Confederate General P.G.T. Beauregard. The wolf wore a Confederate gray uniform and cap depicted with a wink. It was created as a jab at UNR’s wolf mascot—Southern “Rebel” wolf versus Northern wolf.

Primary worry from this wonderful piece: can Cal wrap up Jackson Arnold?

Rae Moulton's avatar

Exactly. Tackling fundamentals will be crucial to prevent an Arnold chunk run or two. I’m not too worried about his passing but if Cal can’t contain him on the ground it could be a very long day.

Lyons is a Hayward kid and Tennyson grad who initially started at Washington. Cool to see him getting regular reps.
