Cal basketball debuts a new California state themed court at Haas Pavilion
What do you think of the new-look Pete Newell Court?
The California Golden Bears have been doing some remodelling in preparation for their move to the ACC. And they have a new look on their basketball court—the state of California now is the major highlight at center court.
Here’s a look at the live rebuild on Instagram (click here or below to view the reel).
This redesign appears to be an interesting pivot to lean more into the original identity of the university as the state’s flagship, the University of California. It feels like a compromise between the usually separate Cal athletic and Berkeley academic brands. Nationalizing awareness that Cal and UC Berkeley are the same institution should be a top priority for the university in the decades to come.
The old look of the court featured a large Cal script.
Before that, there was the famous growling bear.
Cal fans, thoughts on the new Pete Newell basketball court?
I love it. We need to start embracing things like this and the California state flag into our school and branding.
My only recommendation would have been making the outline color of the state of California gold rather than blue. Leave the California script in blue and make the outline of the state Gold would have been perfect as it would put both our school colors on the court and California is the Golden State.
Love the comments. Love the look. It’s time for a four-by-four to the forehead of all East Coasters that the team kicking their ass on the blond wood court is the flagship of the Golden State, please welcome your University of California Golden Bears.
