The transfer portal gave to Cal during the last cycle. At least to start 2023-24, it is taking.
Freshman guard Rodney Brown Jr. became the fourth California Golden Bear to enter the transfer portal, joining Devin Askew, Grant Newell and ND Okafor. Brown was one of four Golden Bears to play all 32 games during the 2023-24 campaign, averaging 3.5 points and 1.1 rebounds in 14.1 minutes per game off the bench as a freshman.
Brown was expected to be one of the key returning players for a new-look Cal roster. It’s likely that as with the other three departing Bears, they wanted to see if there were any clear-cut starting opportunities out there.
Cal is down to Jalen Celestine among returning guards, with Jeremiah Wilkinson now likely to immediately contribute when he comes to campus this year. As for filling out the roster, Cal will have to work hard in the portal to rebuild their team from scratch.
Such is life in the portal era of hoops.
This is very surprising…..half the returning team (all positions) are movin on. I can’t believe that these particular players are attracting too much NIL money: none of them were overly impressive. Interesting to see if there are any portal players ready to announce they are coming to Cal!!
Yes, this one worries me. The only optimistic scenario is that Madsen really believes these guys are not worth keeping based on what he believes he'll get coming in. Otherwise, we either lack the NIL money to keep them, or the players aren't happy at Cal. Since the players gush all over the place about loving the coaches, it's hard to believe it is that. So maybe it is money? Maybe it is the coaches saying they should look elsewhere? Lots of questions.
