One of the stipulations of Cal’s Under Armour contract was more chances to see the favorite uniform of many a bear—the Joe Roth uniforms from the 1970s—back in action.
Cal has played in these uniforms nearly every season in the Joe Roth Memorial Game in Berkeley, which features either USC or UCLA, depending on the year. They’ve been great, and one of the redeeming qualities of the much-maligned Under Armour deal (Under Armour has been trying to exit out of their arrangement with the University of California for a few years, leading to numerous issues like lack of practice apparel and lack of merchandise to sell to fans).
Cal hasn’t worn the road uniforms yet though, but that changes Saturday night at USC.
The gold helmets stay mostly the same, but what does change is the shirts (blue to white, with blue numbering rather than gold) and shorts (gold to blue). They still look as fresh as ever.
There are many rumors swirling that Cal will probably be moving on from Under Armour sooner rather than later, so this is your chance to see them in action before they’re likely out of circulation for a bit.
Cal fans, what are your thoughts on the Joe Roth away uniforms?
Watching the offense will be 50% less painful when the players look that sharp
Cal MBB was one of the original Jordan Brand teams (along with, I think, Cincinnati, St. Johns, and North Carolina A&T). I'd love to see us rekindle that relationship.
Or, you know, be able to buy some sort of Cal merchandise.
