Cal lands punter Lachlan Wilson from Tulsa
A nice grab in the transfer portal to offset the loss of Jamieson Sheehan.
The California Golden Bears have a punter battle likely ensuing this offseason. Another Aussie will be lacing up their cleats to boot the football deep in 2023. With the departure of Jamieson Sheehan, Cal went into the transfer portal and landed Lachlan Wilson out of Tulsa.
Lachlan Wilson was a three-year starting punter for the Golden Hurricanes. He should have two years of eligibility remaining, due to COVID. He averaged 42.9 yards per punt in 2020 (42nd in FBS), peaked at 45.7 yards per punt in 2021 (17th), and stabilized at 43.8 this past season (T-31st).
He had some outstanding moments this season.
He will have stiff competition. Wilson will battle redshirt freshman Ethan Baxter for the starting job. Another Aussie, Baxter is also a veteran of Prokick Australia, same as Sheehan and previous Cal punter Steven Coutts.
The punting battle could be one of the fiercest in college football. Can’t wait!
If I recall correctly, Ben Franklin once said "in this world nothing can said to be certain except death, taxes, and an Aussie punter at Cal"
still no QB though? maybe Spav's going pure Wildcat on every play... as long as they're 'rebuilding', can they give Mendoza a chance to throw once a game, maybe twice? Lack of depth is a Wilcox calling card. But great, let's welcome another punter.
