This makes a lot of sense. Cal will already be making regular trips to Florida within the ACC schedule, so more non-conference games on the west coast are the way to go now.
Maybe we hate UCLA for leaving the Pac, but getting exposure in L.A. is good for Cal's recruiting and keeping connected with SoCal alums. No, playing San Diego State does not have the same effect.
Even though it will be great to continue our rivalry with UCLA for the next 4 years. UCLA is already trying to cut expenses being in the Big 10. They were the one that left the Pac -12 for so called greener pastures and a bigger payday. I know this will help CAL for one game out of year to reduce travel expenses but, We have to build on own path within the ACC and play non- conference games with SEC, Big 12 and other Big 10 opponents if We want to be considered for future playoffs positions with the new format. If We play the schools that left the PAC 12 and left us and the other 3 schools high and dry to scramble and fend for ourselves. I feel it gives them a bigger reward knowing how powerless We were to stop them for the bottom line.
I can understand why people say they hate USC and UCLA. But play them we must. There is huge upside to Cal Athletics in having them on our schedule every year.
OldBear: Good point. I completely forgot that Florida is our new Southern California. Miami and FSU will replace fUCLA and U$C. Other than the humidity, mosquitoes, deep-red politics and five hour plane ride to get there, it's practically the same place!
We are already trekking to that part of the country during the regular season, so why go across the country for a tough game when we can stay in California and sell a lot of tickets...
I would prefer we not play UCLA ever again. I would prefer to just schedule future MWC partner SDSU. Do a 3 year series that is a home/home and neutral site game at SoFi.
I am usually a bit nervous with openings vs. P-5 teams. Though we've done okay with them ....granted even the Auburn game last year was close but exasperating.
I have mixed feelings about this. Partly, I want to say fUCLA and never play them again. That said, this is probably a smart move from the perspective of ticket sales (which will probably not be stellar for some ACC teams).
Hopefully our defense hits hard enough to enforce payment...with interest.
But, really, we should be playing UCLA every year in perpetuity. If we can maintain annual rivalries with UCLA and Furd (which doesn't even count as an OOC game), then I can move on to the acceptance phase of grief over the Pac's demise.
I also have zero interest in going to Florida. I have no interest in traveling to Florida. I'd rather travel to see the Rainbow Warriors than the Tebow Warriors.
I know this is probably the right decision for at least a few reasons, but I’m also butt hurt and petty, so I want fUCLA to suffer a bit more before doing them a solid.

Question: Why did we cancel the series with Florida? It seems like we would have gotten some good exposure. Any thoughts?
we're also already getting exposure in FL by playing Miami and FSU. Also keeping to the A/B/C out-of-conference scheduling strategy

Florida isn't really DEEP red (especially in Miami).
There goes our chances of being the undisputed State of Florida champions.

Speculation is to save on travel cost.

I think giving UCLA a yearly beating as punishment for aiding in the death of the Pac is a good thing.
As a SoCal resident I can’t help but like this. Beats the Coliseum, too.
Although the Rose Bowl is starting to show its age…

When my ex moved out and we divorced, I didn't make arrangements to keep hanging out with her afterwards.
Cal football oughta follow that example with their ex.
Only thing tho is playing in SoCal is good for recruiting. Otherwise I would be 100% there with you
There's always SDSU.

I hate UCLA but I want to preserve the rivalry as much as possible.
I hate ucla and have no desire to preserve a rivalry that ucla didn’t feel was important enough to preserve when they decided to leave the Pac12.
I don’t want it for them. I want it for us. We need to have a presence in SoCal and our fans enjoy the trip.
