Cal football transfer portal visits: WR Mikey Matthews, OL Victor Stoffel, QB Chubba Purdy
Cal has some top portal targets visiting in the coming days.
On the heels of the commitment of running back Kadarius Calloway via the transfer portal, here are some nuggets of public transfer portal news involving our California Golden Bears.
Quarterback Chubba Purdy, transfer out of Nebraska, will make his final official visit to Berkeley on January 13. He will also visit North Texas, TCU, and San Jose State in the week leading up to his trip to Cal, according to Brad Cesmat of Sports360AZ. The brother of San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy, Chubba completed 51% of his passes for 529 yards at Nebraska, adding 253 rushing yards and three rush touchdowns.
At FSU, he saw action in four games, completing 32 of 58 (55.2%) for 317 yards with four TDs and just one pick and 62 rushing yards.
Wide receiver Mikey Mathews, transfer out of Utah, is visiting Cal this weekend after taking a trip to Baylor, according to Greg Biggins of 247Sports. Matthews had a productive freshman campaign, hauling in 29 catches for 261 yards and over 300 return yards in the special teams game. He is ranked as the 97th best prospect in the portal and 20th best wide receiver by 247Sports.
Also expected to visit is offensive tackle Victor Stoffel from Temple, as reported by Pete Nokas at On3. He was the starting right tackle for the Owls the last two seasons and could compete for an open tackle spot next season. Stoffel is the 30th best offensive tackle prospect in the portal, according to 247Sports.
Despite the best efforts of Coaches Wilcox and Sirmon, both highly regarded in the west defensive minds, Cal has seen an overall decline of their defense over the last few years. So I applaud the decision depicted in the lead photo to actually deploy 7 actual bears as their front 7. An obvious solution!
And well timed, as the NCAA does not seem to be as picky about recruiting and eligibility as they were a few years ago. This new source of enhanced personnel might not have been considered acceptable a decade ago. It's NIL friendly too, a few crates of berries, a few jars of honey, and a couple of chests full of salmon probably took care of it.
I know a 4-star WR and the younger Purdy are the more exciting possibilities, but an experienced OT would be critical. He's apparently from Sweden so I'll be real mad if someone didn't shake down the Emeryville Ikea for some NIL money.
