Cal wide receivers coach Burl Toler announces departure
The Bears have another opening in their offensive staff.
After the shocking turn of Fernando Mendoza entering the transfer portal this morning, another little piece of change has dropped. Cal wide receivers coach Burl Toler III announced on Twitter that he will no longer be part of the Golden Bear coaching staff. New offensive coordinator Bryan Harsin will likely be looking to bring in his own staff on the ball.
Here is Toler’s goodbye message.
The Cal football alum from the glorious Aaron Rodgers years joined the coaching staff in 2018 as a running backs coach and as served as wide receivers coach since 2019. Toler added recruiting coordinator responsibilities in 2022. The Bears did have one of the more prolific passing offenses in college football this season, ranking 27th in passing yards per game.
There are yet to be any official announcements on former offensive coordinator (and still current offensive line coach) Mike Bloesch, former quarterbacks coach Sterlin Gilbert (Harsin assumed these responsibilities), current running backs coach Aristotle Thompson (who has coached with Harsin at Boise), and current tight ends coach Mike Saffell. Justin Wilcox did announce in his press conference today that playcalling would be a collaborative effort in the LA Bowl.
Regardless of how you feel about this move and before you comment, respect that the Tolers are Cal family.
I'm torn about this. I played with his Dad, Burl Jr. The Toler family is just a great family and are Golden Bears through and through. Blll did a great job recruiting. I'm guessing Harsin is meeting with staff and making decisions about who to keep. We need a big change on the offensive side of the ball. More grit and more nasty. I wonder if we will lose any more kids to the Portal with this announcement?
