Cal wide receivers Josiah Martin and Mikey Matthews enter transfer portal
The California Golden Bears will need to begin restocking their wide receiver depth in the coming weeks as three wideouts have now left.
It was expected that after the departure of Burl Toler to UCLA that Cal would see some attrition in the wide receiving corps. The first came from promising freshman wideout Josiah Martin last week.
In his freshman campaign, Martin saw a decent amount of action. He caught two passes for 29 yards against Florida State, grabbed five passes for 34 yards against North Carolina State, and had Cal's only touchdown on an end-around against UNLV to go along with four catches for 40 yards.
Today, Mikey Matthews entered the transfer portal as well, as reported by multiple outlets. Matthews caught 32 passes (fourth in receptions on the team) for 272 yards, highlighted by a six-catch, 63 yard performance against Wake Forest. He returned 16 punts this season for 67 yards and had seven rushes for 29 yards as well.
With Nyziah Hunter also off to Nebraska, the battle is wide open for the top wide receiver spot on the roster. Both Kyion Grayes and Tobias Merriweather were expected to contend, but struggled with injuries all season. With only Jonathan Brady slated to return among the top four wideouts (Trond Grizzell did walk on Senior Day but still has eligibility, so his decision is still pending), Cal will have openings for starting slots.
Sorry to see them go
Any news/buzz on the QB front in terms of prospects via the portal? I would imagine receivers would want to know who the likely QB is.
