ACC refs unofficially suspend official for phantom Cal offside against Notre Dame
"We've investigated ourselves and found we did a thing that was wrong that hurt Cal, but will not tell anyone publicly. Have a great day!"
UPDATE: Apparently no one was suspended and that ref made the trip to another Notre Dame game. Amazing.
For those wanting an update on the Cal and Notre Dame offside call, we have news! The ACC messed up, but will not tell anyone.
Roxy Bernstein with the update:
With Cal up 7-0 in the second quarter, Notre Dame lined up to kick a field goal to get their first points of the game. The Irish missed the field goal, but Cal was called for an offside penalty that. You can see in the above line drawn by the announcers (who were incredulous about the call).
Notre Dame went from a missed field goal to immediately scoring a game-tying touchdown, and eventually went onto win 24-17.
So if you’re counting at home, Cal had a very real chance to go 4-0 (or at least play for it in an overtime situation). Since that touchdown shouldn’t have happened, should we print the “Cal 17, Notre Dame 17” t-shirts?
If we're printing shirts, put me down for a "Cal 20, Notre Dame 17" since we'd have just kicked a routine field goal instead of thrown up a hail mary. But of course, parallel universes don't matter...
My T-Shirt will say:
"The Immaculate Encroachment
Cal v. Notre Dame
2022"
