Bad news. Missed opportunity to start a new and much more competitive west coast conference. Sellout to East Coast time zone on a welfare share grovelling to be P5. Could have been a leader of something new and exciting after decades of losing. Revealing that hardly anyone in the media talks about how competitive Cal will be in actually winning in the ACC, just $$. This move just proves that Cal football is simply a vessel for $$ with no real interest in winning. The fact that they will now have to travel 3000 miles for a football/volleyball/swim meet while professing to care deeply about global warming, well so much for that argument.

The west coast does not have enough football powerhouses, nor enough academically highly rated schools to form a new a conference. Anent your other concern, Cal had best step up the football program's wins record because the new deal is going to be performance based. The more wins, the more dollars.

What in the world gives any indication that Cal is ready to step up their game in football? They've had 70 years to do that. I respectfully disagree about the other schools, they could have formed a conference with other schools at a lower $$ amount that could have been exciting, more.locally based, and that Cal and Stanford could have been leaders in. The other sports could be funded with donations and diversion from other budget items. Prostituting Cal football so that' it's pretty much guaranteed to lose so that other sports can exist, count me out on that strategy.

Stanford's President made it clear that the G5 was not an option for them.

And disagree with your conclusion. If the Chancellor has not seen the light about the need for a a winning football team, she would have just agreed for Cal to move to the MWC.

Imo the play wasn't MWC, it was rebuild the Pac with west teams. The OSU AD had it right. ACC is more of the same 5-7 a couple minor bowl games every decade except 3000 miles away

the only play was to merge with the MWC. That would avoid any penalties for MWC teams leaving, That said, rebuilding the Pac with a bunch of MWC teams just relegates the rebuilt Pac to G5 status. And the TV money would barely cover Wilcox's salary. Stanford made it clear that they were not interested in such a plan, at least for them.
