Cal vs. San Diego State Football Insta-Recap & Rate the Game: Bears Roll to 31-10 Win Against the Aztecs
Cal is now 3-0, for the first time since 2019
The California Golden Bears (3-0) tore apart the San Diego State Aztecs (1-2) in the second half to close the game with a 31-10 win.
California scored on all but two of its drives in the second half to pull away from San Diego State after an anemic 7-3 lead at halftime.
Although California head coach Justin Wilcox was without his star running back Jaydn Ott, who did not dress for the game, his Golden Bears dominated the run game. California ended the game with 275 rushing yards, including a game-high 169 from sophomore Jaivian Thomas. Senior Kadarius Colloway had 87 yards with the rock on nine attempts and one score, and quarterback Fernando Mendoza added another rushing touchdown.
Despite the final scoreline, the result did not come easy for the Golden Bears. California and San Diego State struggled to convert on third down in the first half and gave up 19 penalties, including 10 in the first quarter alone.
California's student section was particularly restless. The Mountain West officiating team gave the Golden Bears two unsportsmanlike penalties after fans ignored four repeated calls to stop throwing cards onto the field. By the end of the evening, the two teams both gave up more than 100 yards in penalties on 27 flags.
The Golden Bears are now 3-0 for the first time since 2019.

A very rare game for Wilcox in which we put the game away in the second half instead of making it unnecessarily close.
Let's start the game stronger next week in Tallahassee.
Two trends that worry me:
1. It seems to take a few series for the defense to settle in and play well.
2. The offense struggles to play two halves of good football.
