If that is the actual picture of the lion, it is a young male (as the mane clearly displays). Young males are often solitary or perhaps joined by a litter mate brother or 2. They are extremely dangerous, low probability hunters (mostly stealing / feeding on carcass) & opportunistic.

While a great photo this gentleman is lucky to be not severely injured much less alive.

I completely understand why they are doing it, but it still makes me a bit sad. The administration costs of Smile must have been astronomical, for little impact for most of the charities. I hope they direct a similar amount of money to more targeted philanthropy in the future.

Also, it only generated $377MM in 10 years! That's nothing. My company donates more than $400MM each and every year.

I’ll never understand why Fox eschews bigs to focus his recruiting on wings when he runs his O through the C. He’s basically signed just 2 bigs in 4 years, and about 47 wings…

Expand full comment

There are a lot more wings out there. And the "good" bigs have plenty of better options/offers. Could it be that not very many are interested?

Expand full comment

Sure, it’s possible, but not likely. Cal is rarely a destination for players that have multiple options, but plenty of bigs out there at the JC or low level mid-majors would likely relish a chance to play at the P5 level.

I just don’t think it’s a point of emphasis for Mark Fox, who apparently prefers slow, lumbering, un-athletic bigs with bad hands and zero low post moves to run his offense through. It just shows his limitations and is directly on brand with Fox’s archaic offensive scheme, despite the entire basketball world going to more mobile, athletic bigs. Much like Musgrave, the dude is committed to an offensive style that is on its way out of organized basketball.

Expand full comment

Good point about Fox's preferred style, established over a number of years. It's a problem seen elsewhere in recent years and various sports. Some coaches developed a preferred style or scheme based on what they were dealing with at the time (and what they in turn were coached to, in many cases). And in fairness, it often had some success at some point. But the trick is to adapt when others adapt to what they (and their ilk) were successfully doing. Coaches that have had some success doing what they decided to do for a reason can have a hard time realizing what was a good idea isn't anymore. Or if they do realize it, can they actually adapt again? Some do, and usually end up in some hall of fame somewhere. But it is easier said than done.

Expand full comment

Completely agree, Andy. Just like with Bill Musgrave, I don’t think Mark Fox suddenly forgot everything he’s learned in 30 years as a coach…I just think the game has changed and evolved, and some coaches are better suited to adapt to those changes than others.

Fox does not strike me as one of those guys…nothing he does is incredibly innovative, and in this day and age, hanging your hat on hard nosed fundamental defense is fine, but not if you struggle to the extent he does on the offensive side of the ball.

Expand full comment

(and his C, while he has worked hard to become a legit Pac-12 player .. . has bad hands and has no options from the elbow where he catches it 60% of the time)

Expand full comment

Exactly, T…it’s just puzzling. And Lars has absolutely improved…it’s just he still is incredibly limited.

I agree completely that the makings are there to be at least a .500 team…it’s just Fox recruited a bunch of guys that do not fit his system, and he lacks the ability to adjust his style to his players strengths …which is why he should be fired.

Sean Miller, Shaka, Nate Oats, Mussleman…there is no shortage of HC’s out there that could succeed with this unit.

I can’t believe how poorly Wilcox has managed the QB and OL positions.

Expand full comment

Agree with the general sentiment, but not sure this particular loss really hurts us much. Was he actually going to play ever?

Expand full comment

He would have been QB2 this year, which means he will never see the field.

Expand full comment

It’s baffling. Combined, our QB room has never taken a meaningful snap at the collegiate level, and has 6 career passes to their credit. I mean, we hope Sam Jackson is legit, but nothing in Wilcox’s 6 years gives confidence that he will be.

And the lack of additions to the OL after actually losing bodies is beyond problematic…I hear there’s no more signings coming til after graduation, so they’ll miss spring ball. Great…wonder why more people are not concerned about this…

Expand full comment

I am concerned but not panicked yet. There will definitely be another QB coming in after Spring ball but 3 scholarship QBs aint much when you are dual threating your way to getting smashed by 350 lb lineman all game long.

The OL is weird. On the one hand, Angus might be the worst OL coach in the history or organized sport and the new guy is a MASSIVE upgrade who will likely get the most out of what we got. Our interior is at least Pac12 average talent wise but the OTs...ooof. A lot of prayers to Jesus, Yahweh or Allah going on there. I dont trust the portal for OTs but allegedly the boosters have set aside a significant chunk of change for some OTs post Spring. We'll see what it means in May I suppose...

Expand full comment

Not one QB on the roster has experience and whomever is the starter will be playing behind a new and inexperienced line. On many fronts that is an immediate concern.

Rumor has it Jackson can run, thank gawd.

Expand full comment

Who is the 3rd QB on scholarship? Sam Jack, Mendoza and…?

I agree that the new OL coach is an upgrade over Angus but that is a super low bar to clear. The real question is how much of an upgrade. The new guy could be a 4 star Michelin chef but he is currently working with McDonald’s quality ingredients.
