Georgia the country was a kingdom created by David III of Tao via the military consolidation of several smaller feudal regions that were vestigial from the Persian/Roman wars and called it Sakartvelo. David then gave the kingdom to his adopted infant child Bagrat III. Bagrat came of age, but the area descended into civil war. Bagrat III’s forces won and he renamed the kingdom after his young son George. George the First ascended to the throne when he was about 12 and lasted 13 years before dying of disease. George’s reign was physically dubious, having lost about a third of Georgia’s territory in a war against the Byzantine Empire. However, he was politically successful by aligning several parties that would end up allowing the kingdom to survive.

Georgia the US State is named after British King George II, the second in a succession of the House of Hanover. While the crown has officially transitioned through other reigning houses, that Germanic lineage remains intact in today’s current UK royalty.
