After winning the 2V8+ race, The Golden Bears had a three-point lead in the standings going into the final race as they split the 3V8+ and freshmen 8+ races with Washington, leaving it up to the varsity eight crew to bring home the title.
In the V8+ race, Cal and Washington were even through the start but the Bears we able to build a deck lead in the opening 500 meters. Cal continued to push and opened a bow to stern lead through the halfway mark. The Bears didn't let up and grew their lead to open water in the third 500 meters, managing to finish four seconds ahead of Washington in a time of 5:34.673 to secure the Pac-12 Championship.
That's an impressive margin over UW's boat, given its open water the Huskies have experience on. Record heat in the valley this weekend, I wonder if/how that factored in?

That's because the Board of Directors will not approve a budget that they can neither understand, explain, or defend to the ratepayers. The contracts and the cost of labor are a driver of operating costs and, therefore, the rates.
Same thing should apply when OUSD explains to the State of California how they're going to pay for the contract.

BERKELEY – The California softball team will begin its postseason road in Oklahoma where it will compete in the Norman Regional, along with the host No. 1 seed Sooners, Missouri and Hofstra.
The Golden Bears are making their first postseason appearance since the 2018 season and 34th in program history.
Cal begins the four-team, three-day event at 4:30 p.m. PT on ESPN+ vs. Missouri, an at-large selection from the SEC. The Tigers went 34-24 in 2023.

It was true then and it's true now. At least we have new coaches who seem an order of magnitude more competent than their predecessors. And our presumed QB1 is more mobile which could, in theory, keep defenses more honest.
Every season is a primrose path until the action starts and we are forced to accept the hard reality.

Cal finished third two years ago and sixth last year. The folks at the Shutdown Fullcast (Spencer and Holly mostly) get the weird college football online community to get together to raise funds for New American Pathways who help refugees to the US get adjusted and gain support.
People donate in amounts that reflect superiority over their rivals (hence my first donation this week was for $27.20 - replicating the score of last season's Big Game Victory.

I'm sure they will spin it otherwise, but IMO this was a disaster for the union. Big pay raises were already on the table before the strike began, and on the various other "common good" items that their leaders claimed they were continuing the strike for, all they got was some MOUs that are (1) non-binding and (2) lay out stuff that the district was mostly already doing anyway. And for that, kids lost 8 days of school while the union got pilloried in the press and alienated families. If I were in that union I'd want new leadership.

Which raises the big question in my mind - why is OUSD agreeing to a contract they haven't scored? The reputation of managerial incompetence is well-deserved.
I wonder if this is standard practice . . . they negotiate and then report to the state. No idea if it is.
Maybe it's standard practice for OUSD. It isn't standard practice for all governmental entities, I can tell you that. EBMUD negotiates contracts with its unions every four years. Management doesn't agree to contract provisions, benefits, or salary increases without having scored it first.
That's because the Board of Directors will not approve a budget that they can neither understand, explain, or defend to the ratepayers. The contracts and the cost of labor are a driver of operating costs and, therefore, the rates.
Same thing should apply when OUSD explains to the State of California how they're going to pay for the contract.
Yeah, I have no idea. In that Chron article the state regulator didn't seem to think there was anything strange about this process, but I'm not knowledgeable either way.
