[MROW] No. 1 Cal Repeats As Pac-12 Champions

https://calbears.com/news/2023/5/14/mens-rowing-no-1-cal-repeats-as-pac-12-champions.aspx

LOWELL – The No. 1 California men's rowing team had another outstanding weekend of racing, securing the Pac-12 Championship title for the second year in a row. After winning the 2V8+ race, The Golden Bears had a three-point lead in the standings going into the final race as they split the 3V8+ and freshmen 8+ races with Washington, leaving it up to the varsity eight crew to bring home the title.

In the V8+ race, Cal and Washington were even through the start but the Bears we able to build a deck lead in the opening 500 meters. Cal continued to push and opened a bow to stern lead through the halfway mark. The Bears didn't let up and grew their lead to open water in the third 500 meters, managing to finish four seconds ahead of Washington in a time of 5:34.673 to secure the Pac-12 Championship.

[BASE] Bears Erupt For 16 Runs In Win Over Cougars

BERKELEY – Runs were abundant as both sides provided plenty of offense Saturday. In the end, the Cal baseball team made more noise as the Golden Bears defeated Washington State 16-10 to even up the series a game apiece.

Cal (22-24, 10-16 Pac-12) matched season highs in runs scored and extra-base hits. The Bears also scored 16 in the win over Ohio State on Mar. 4. Every Cal batter recorded at least one hit with Dom Souto leading all players with four hits. He finished the day 4-for-5 with a run scored and two driven in. It is Souto's 13th multi-hit game this season, but first career four-hit game. Max Handron remains red-hot, he went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles. Rodney Green Jr., Carson Crawford, and Jack Johnston all hit home runs and all three drove in three runs. Kade Kretzschmar went 2-for-4 with two doubles, three runs scored, and an RBI.

A document describing a foreign government’s military defenses, including its nuclear capabilities, was found by FBI agents who searched former president Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence and private club last month, according to people familiar with the matter, underscoring concerns among U.S. intelligence officials about classified material stashed in the Florida property.

Some of the seized documents detail top-secret U.S. operations so closely guarded that many senior national security officials are kept in the dark about them. Only the president, some members of his Cabinet or a near-Cabinet-level official could authorize other government officials to know details of these special-access programs, according to people familiar with the search, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe sensitive details of an ongoing investigation.

Oakland teacher's strike finally over. Thank God!

https://www.eastbaytimes.com/2023/05/15/the-oakland-teachers-strike-is-over-school-to-resume-as-normal-tuesday/

I'm sure they will spin it otherwise, but IMO this was a disaster for the union. Big pay raises were already on the table before the strike began, and on the various other "common good" items that their leaders claimed they were continuing the strike for, all they got was some MOUs that are (1) non-binding and (2) lay out stuff that the district was mostly already doing anyway. And for that, kids lost 8 days of school while the union got pilloried in the press and alienated families. If I were in that union I'd want new leadership.

Expand full comment

The linked article is behind a paywall. So I went behind a different paywall (sfchronicle.com) and read their reporting. Here's an interesting excerpt -

The district will now crunch the numbers and submit a plan to cover the cost of the contract, Castro added. Castro’s office has not yet reviewed the financial feasibility of the agreement and will only do so after the union and school board have formally signed off on the agreement.

Which raises the big question in my mind - why is OUSD agreeing to a contract they haven't scored? The reputation of managerial incompetence is well-deserved.

Expand full comment

I wonder if this is standard practice . . . they negotiate and then report to the state. No idea if it is.

Expand full comment

Maybe it's standard practice for OUSD. It isn't standard practice for all governmental entities, I can tell you that. EBMUD negotiates contracts with its unions every four years. Management doesn't agree to contract provisions, benefits, or salary increases without having scored it first.

That's because the Board of Directors will not approve a budget that they can neither understand, explain, or defend to the ratepayers. The contracts and the cost of labor are a driver of operating costs and, therefore, the rates.

Same thing should apply when OUSD explains to the State of California how they're going to pay for the contract.

Expand full comment

Yeah, I have no idea. In that Chron article the state regulator didn't seem to think there was anything strange about this process, but I'm not knowledgeable either way.
