Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, celebrates the emancipation of enslaved people in the United States. It commemorates June 19, 1865, when Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced the freedom of enslaved individuals, two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation. Juneteenth became a federal holiday in 2021.
