Larry Berroya Memorial Donations
If you're able, please consider donating in honor of our beloved friend and former WFC contributor
Ed note: Thanks to Terence for writing out the message below:
Five years ago, the Cal community, the Bay Area and California Golden Blogs (the antecedent to Write For California) tragically lost Larry Berroya (reef) to a drunk driver in San Francisco.
Nick and other members of the Cal community (including myself, and Lindsay Gottleib) wrote about how much it hurt to lose a dear friend. Five years later, Larry’s passing doesn’t get any easier. I keep wanting to text him about defensive improvements from Michelle Oniyah or weakness at the point of attack on-ball defending in various situations, but he won’t be there to answer.
In order to honor Larry’s memory, and call attention to the dangers of drunk driving and the visibility of the intersection CA-35 in Pacifica, at Skyline and Cypress, the Berroya family has ordered a “Please Don’t Drink and Drive” and “In Memory of Lawrence Berroya” sign to be placed at the intersection. The family has paid for the sign, but has opened up to donations should any of you want to contribute.
The total fee was $1000, but they’re asking for donations in increments of $10.
Paypal: berroyafamily@yahoo.com
Venmo: DCFog81
Any amounts over the $1000 will go to Donors Choose, which will assist and help teachers per Larry’s chosen profession and real love - teaching.
I only knew him thanks to his astute basketball analysis, but it sounds like Larry was an awesome person to hang out with too. He deserves to be remembered.
Hard to believe it has been 5 years. A churro to victory will remain an important part of Cal sporting events. (Even if they are not always successful)
