Report: Cal TE Coach Tim Plough in talks to become the new UC Davis Football Head Coach
A possible return to Plough's former confines
Current Cal Tight Ends coach Tim Plough may be a hot commodity for a promotion coming soon. Plough, a former UC Davis quarterback in the mid 2000’s, has been a name that has been floated around for the Aggies Opening (paywall), after the resignation of Dan Hawkins. Additionally, Plough served as offensive coordinator for UC Davis from 2017-2020, among a myriad of other roles in Davis throughout his coaching tenure.
If Plough takes the job, he would be the third Cal assistant to become a FCS head coach post Berkeley after Charlie Ragle went to Idaho State and Beau Baldwin went to Cal Poly.
The first year TE coach with the Bears has been instrumental in the development of Jack Endries and the rest of the tight end room. In the run game, Endries, JT Byrne, Asher Alberding, and Jeffrey Johnson have all played big roles in pulling blocks, creating holes for Jaydn Ott, Isaiah Ifanse, and others to run through. It’s been nothing short of spectacular, after the tight end room lacked identity in recent seasons.
If Plough ends up becoming the man for the job, we will update that here at Write For California.
It would be a shame to lose him. On the other hand, if our assistants consistently get hired off to be head coaches, I would think that would make this an attractive coaching tree to become a part of.
IMO, the most important offensive coaches to keep are Spav and Bloesch.
