Read in a recent article (not sure where, but a legit source) about the meeting of the Pac ? presidents called to consider the $30MM / per annum proffered by the networks (ESPN?). Evidently, one of the school presidents (unnamed) boasted that a professor (also unnamed) at his/her school analyzed the situation and concluded that the Pac ? was worth at least $50MM annually per school. That statement and ensuing conversation let to the $50MM each hard counter offer that caused the network to walk and the rest is history. Does anyone know which school president and professor came up with the SECish notion? These two as well as Georgie K should probably be added to the draw and quarter list. Since Golden Gate Fields has shut down there should be no shortage of horses available for hire.

Just reread the statements from Clueless, Empty Suit, and Daffy. The more I read their out-of-touch, oblivious, bile inducing comments the more I believe the only way to save Cal's athletic future is to draw and quarter these 3 Fools in front of Harmon gym (or whatever it's called now) at high noon. Should probably whack their idiot aides and advisors as well.

The B1G needs to wake up and stop letting the network execs call the shots. If two of the biggest academic powerhouses in the Power 5 don't end up joining the Power 5 conference with the best academics top to bottom and join the ACC instead, it will be a lost opportunity for the B1G.

“Rather than watch from the sidelines, Athletic Director Jim Knowlton and I are working tirelessly”

In other words, “Rather than not doing our job at all, we are just doing our job very poorly.” You want a gold star or something?

Expand full comment

Wow, how blessed we are that Christ and Knowlton aren’t “watching from the sidelines”!!

What an asinine statement from the chancellor. Zero self awareness and shame from the idiots running the show at Cal. Meanwhile crickets on the ACC front, seems less likely with each passing day that we actually have the votes to get in. If that doesn’t pan out we’re truly f*cked.

Thanks for the down-date Clueless Carol, Empty Suit, you can go sit in the corner (and stay there), and Daffy, well thanks for the pap. --- I was actually excited when I saw "UC Chancellor Carol Christ" on my subject line thinking the extension was going to read "prepones her retirement", but alas, twice alas, no such luck. The bone chilling line, "AD Jim Knowlton and I are working tirelessly with our other critical partners to map out our next steps" almost caused me to create an indiscretion in my drawers. Shit, Cal's athletic future is on the line and she's mapping, not doing. Typical fucking, dithering academic - GO AWAY CAROL, GO AWAY!!!

Y'all, listen to me now, believe me later.

The best, and only, thing Cal can do to right this ship is to have an incredible product on the field in 2 weeks. In the third week kick the living shit out of Auburn. How do I define that? When we get up 10pts, don't fold the tent. Lay 60pts on them!! Problem is Wilcox doesn't have the cajones for that. But guess what, atm, Wilcox and his results are our best marketing. Begging like some common Oliver Twist in London ain't gunna do it.

Once we beat the first 2, we absolutely put a beat down on the third team, who is it NDS? In Pac-0 play we stomp der Quacks, kick the dawgs to the curb, kill all baby cubs and saber Traveler between the eyes!

My takeaway as an alum of Cal is that I was taught to be a critical thinker. Yes indeed, question everything that you are told! Assess the situation and come up with a plan, if minor course adjustments need to be made, make them!!

Knowlton, that cluster fuck, comes from a military background where u are told what to do and how to react. He does not lead Cal women and men. He's a follower.

We are screwed, no leaders or critical thinkers on "the leadership team". Do you realize how much of a joke that term is? Hell, in the corporate world I saw that slung around all the time and yet these same "leaders" had to hire consultants, like me, to get to a reasonable solution.

I'm not pissed or upset about the place we find ourselves in. A bunch of idiots are at the helm, what else would you expect?

End of the day, Wilcox needs to show up with a product and put the beat down on every opponent. Unfortunately that is not in his nature or character.

NOW, Madsen on the other hand, he's gunna give them the business.

Go Bears

in another tweet he's implying that B10 will add WSU and OSU

As for credibility, apparently he's both an "expert" and a "college football fan". How much more credible could anyone be?

Not vouching for the guy at all, but that's not what he says there. He says the B10 would go to 10 conference games and one of the non-conference games could be reserved for a local rival like WSU or OrSU.

Everyone hopefully understands context.

42 million in 1 year, 330 (albeit via ltw) in 5 is much more than say…

Alabama.

This is not acceptable. These clowns have destroyed our athletic department whilst taking more donation money than a school like Alabama who has multiple natties during the same period.

And we’re not even asking for natties. Old blues are content with a seat cushion.

This is flat out disgraceful and this situation could not have been tee’d up any better for them (3 pro sports teams leave the market, ESPN offers multiple times, the regents seem to have begged for a reason)… and yet here we are.

These 2 should not receive pensions if we don’t get a p5 / p4 home. Plain and simple.

I have no words.

For them to both engrain passive excuses for their poor performance while simultaneously conceding to the massive dollar amounts they’ve taken from us is pitiful at best.

We have multiple natties in various sports over the last few years.

We also need to excel in sports that drive revenue.

Begs the question -- is this a purposeful effort to undermine and eventually cancel major D1 sports at Cal?

At some point, incompetence veers into malice.

Expand full comment

I agree. I think Christ saying “a home that reflects our budgetary realities” while simultaneously admitting to taking nearly half a billion in 5 years for sports specifically is what ticks me the most.

Do these 2 really think that they’re going to find employment after uc or that those of us with oop connects aren’t lobbying to have them excused in such a way that pensions are an impossibility. This is absurd. Starting with McKeever and JK.

To both: F around (relegate to non p4/5) and find out. I think they’ve misunderstood the donor base to be all apathetic old blues who won’t seek accountability for this poop show.

Cal added a 240 million dollars to the endowment through light the way on its way to supposedly a 400 million dollar endowment for athletics. You can hope that brings in somewhere around 20 million per year. I heard that the deal was 5 years with no TV contract, then 2 years increasing (33%, 66%) then 100% to 2036. So the last 6 years will be full pay at about 50 million per year by then, if ESPN is not bankrupt.

What contract are you referring to?

I like how the president had to push them to release a statement to the public... lack of awareness...

Wouldn't it be awesome if out of nowhere, all former cal athletes in major professional leagues announce they secretly pulled money together to help CAL athletics (particularly the adjacent sports & Olympic programs) stay afloat for next few years as they navigate the best option rather than the scraping for whatever we can get?).

W/R/T the poll - I am neither nervous or scared. But I am also skeptical or cynical that Cal will find a Power 4 conference home.

I am also increasingly skeptical or cynical that an expanded Pac-4 will be much of a stepping-stone to a Power 4 conference membership. TV networks now rule because of their economic power and the utter abdication of university presidents and chancellors of their responsibility towards intercollegiate athletics.

There is a shift afoot, the outlines of which are not very clear and which will change the intercollegiate athletics landscape permanently.

Expand full comment

I worry that the chances of a short term Pac 4/MWC-marriage leading to a B1G invite down the road are very slim. Once we lose P4/5 status, we face an incredibly uphill battle to the relevancy that is desperately needed to flip the script and change the national Cal narrative that has been shaped by recency bias.

Agreed. Will get only increasingly more difficult to move up after expansion reaches its logical end and contraction begins.
