Cal lands top cornerback transfer target in Brent Austin
The California Golden Bears continue to shore up defensive depth with potential starters.
The California Golden Bears continue to have a successful week in the transfer portal, as they locked in another critical position at cornerback. There was potential starting linebacker Harrison Taggart joining yesterday via BYU. Now USF transfer and potential starting corner Brent Austin picked Cal after taking visits to Miami and Tennessee. It’s an encouraging sign that the Bears are able to win these recruiting battles against major programs.
At 5-11 and 174 pounds, Austin had a breakout campaign in his first season at South Florida, collected 48 tackles and 2 interceptions while leading USF with 10 pass breakups across 13 starts. Austin was previously at James Madison, where he managed 20 tackles in two years. Given Austin’s production from last year, it seems likely that he is a favorite to be one of the next starting cornerbacks.
Hezekiah Masses, Jae’on Young, Khamani Hudson, Kaden Cook competed the most at cornerback during spring camp. Cal also landed the transfer of Utah cornerback Quiimari Shemwell in the past week, so the Bears should have a decent set of options to pick from to replace Nohl Williams and Marcus Harris on the outside.
Welcome to Cal Brent! Go Bears!
We got a kicker too. He doesn't have much experience though.

This is more encouraging portal news. All the better that he visited Miami and kept on going. Those guys still bug me. Go bears.
