Chad Hansen is probably the only transfer WR that produced at a really high level in the last 10 years. Trevor Davis, T. Clark and Crawford are distant 2nd ~4th but were solid contributors.
And our outgoing WR transfers such ad Robertson, Stovall, Sturdivant, Noa all regressed. It does look like Remigio had a good year at Fresno State.
I was following Sturdivant stats at UCLA and he was mediocre at best. Seems like he would have been better off at Memorial getting lots time and plays setting himself up for the league. Oh well, we all make our choices in life. I wish the best for both him and Hunter, hope they don't have any regrets for the rest of his life. Nothing worst than hearing people say shoulda woulda coulda....
Absolutely love this pick up. Sounds like he's got monster potential and is a beast run blocker. I'd rather get some boom or bust guys in here rather than what we've mostly seen over Wilcox's tenure with solid but not game-changing WR3 and WR4 types.
I doubt it. This happens with QBs because one starter gets all the snaps. But multiple WRs have the chance to get the ball on any given play. Both these guys would be out there.
A better question is why is Ott is willing to stay. If you are a top player with NFL dreams, why not try to get into P2 and have a national spotlight on your highlight reel?
He's already first team all Pac-12, and led the conference in rushing despite an average OL. Cal has a long history of good NFL running backs, and I'm sure the NFL is very aware of him.
If he wants public attention and get top 10 Heisman votes, then yes he should transfer. If he wants to be in the NFL, he's best where he is - Cal has a long history of good NFL running backs, and going to Georgia or Bama would only put him in danger of losing playing time to a 5*. Remember Demetrius Robertson?
We've only had so many portal receivers and it's been a mix. Taj Davis was a solid rotation guy this year, Kekoa Crawford was good when he was here, and the other transfers have been so-so (eg Hightower) or are TBD because of injury (Dortch) or because they haven't arrived yet (Merriweather).
Then we really only had one year of portal transfer receivers (2023) that included a solid contributor, a depth guy (that was a mid 3* and our lowest-rated incoming transfer in 2023), and a guy who was injured (himself rated higher than the other two). But per 247 at least, Merriweather is a higher-rated transfer than any of our 2023 guys (0.90 4* transfer rating vs Dortch as a 0.89 3* transfer, Davis at 0.88 and Hightower at 0.85).
All in all, I'd say we've done pretty well in getting receivers from HS and now the portal. The trick is keeping them these days…
Yeah, basically I had high expectations for our 3 transfer WRs in 2023 and they did nothing, so "Wilcox & staff on their consistent ability to pull top-notch wideouts" was far from what I was thinking.
We always seem to have at least a strong WR1 and a decent-good WR2, and enough role players to help. When I have gripes with the offense, it's usually been OL, QB inconsistency, and just bad scheme… So even if you don't feel there have been "top-notch" receivers I'd argue they at least haven't been a bad or frustrating part of the offense, with the exception of blocking on screens
On this year alone, production stats do NOT say transfer WRs produce at an elite level. Of the top 10 receivers (Via https://www.espn.com/college-football/stats/player/_/view/offense/stat/receiving/table/receiving/sort/receivingYards/dir/desc), only Washington (NU) and White (Mich St) are transfers. Half the top 10 QBs are transfers.

I hope his NIL was worth it....
Welcome to Cal.
Go Bears!
fingers crossed

Yeah ,Chip wasted J Mike.
Agreed!!!!

Excellent! Much needed, keep'em coming
So the rumor became reality. Portal taketh, portal giveth and we can certainly use his talent.
Gotta' wonder if this offer is what bummed out Hunter.

So, what’s the best guess why he’s breaking up with us?

Hey in Rivals for Hunter it still reads - "intends to enter" ... perhaps we can keep him. It would be good to have a fully stocked WR room.
You never know, but there’s plenty of balls to go around for two receivers.
No telling. Indeed.
Kudos to Wilcox & staff on their consistent ability to pull top-notch wideouts.
Do they have such abilities? Maybe HS but not any of the transfer portals.
Our WR crew has weirdly never been a problem.

Yeah but he dropped a sure TD grab vs. Zona. We lost
I was thinking of just Hightower and Davis. Kekoa was good but in my mind that was before the transfer portal era.
Kekoa was very average. Remember Nyan Boateng? Also not very productive.
Vic Wharton and Moe Ways were average too. Those four came from Michigan, Florida and Tennessee.
