Tyson is a phenomenal player. He’s got a bit of Magic Johnson in him the way he controls the game and whips passes to marginally open teammates…..who have now learned their hands need to be ready to catch those amazing passes. He will be All PAC 12. Cal would have won but for his cramping up.
Patience and progress indeed, although I'm not sure the pressure is all that great. They have certainly set high expectations for themselves, but there aren't that many of us who actually care and are paying any attention. And I think we're a more reasonable fan base than most.
I think it was a mistake not to start Celestine...or bring others off the bench earlier. I understand it's hard to rotate a lot of guys, but he let too many guys get cold on the bench and it showed.
Interesting that Bowser did not even get in the game, especially after Madsen praised him so much in the St. Thomas game’s postgame comments. Is Bowser injured?
Yes, we absolutely should win these early non-conference games like this routinely. Yet, I'm not all this troubled by this loss. We have a very new roster and coaching staff, so it's understandable that there's going to be an uncomfortable learning period for the program. Our kryptonite is clearly defending the 3. I'll be interested to see what fixes the staff tries to make. On the positive side, we finally have enough guys that can make shots in a variety of ways. Having a consistent low post scorer we can lean on when buckets get hard is a tremendous advantage. And our guys do a good job of attacking the basket and getting to the line. That said, we also need to prioritize threes, which so far we have not. We need more drive and kick ball distribution from the guard spots. Cone and Askew are each better off the ball IMO. I suspect we'll see Tyson take on more of the PG duties as the season moves along. I like our roster and still think we're gonna beat good teams in our conference, but there will be a learning curve over the next month or two as the staff figures out a rotation and the team develops an identity.
Lots that needs to be cleaned up on defense. It was clear there were lots of miscommunications on when to switch and when not to switch. These miscommunications led to way too many wide open shots. That should get fixed with time, but hoping it happens sooner rather than later
Awful shooting night from 3's and FT, it happens. Team will get back to shooting the ball better. Lots of work needs to be done on defense. Not upset about this loss but expect improvement each and every game during OOC schedule.
Bad defense and too many 3’s. Need to get the ball inside more and pass out to the perimeter for open shots. Play inside out more. Madson will fix these problems. He was trained by Monty. Don’t give up hope yet!!
I suppose we have to bring our expectations back down to earth. Hope to see improvement as the season continues. Bad losses happen given all our changes and the unpredictable nature of college basketball but this isn't an easy one to sugarcoat.
I had them too, unrealistic as they may have been.
I mean, the missed FTs and cold shooting night from 3 can happen. Letting a non-descript mid-major that’s picked to finish near the bottom of the WCC come into your house and shred the nets and outscore your bench 36-5 can’t…at least not if you’re going to shock the world and orchestrate the single greatest turnaround in NCAA MBB history.
Absolutely. They left points at the line. They were ice cold from behind the arc. You’re going to have those days.
The concern is the defense, as they’ve let a couple of beatable teams do basically whatever they wanted to in the first 2 games, at Haas. Now sure, Kennedy’s return by early Dec (?!?) will help, as will playing more games together…plus Madsen/staff have the right to make adjustments schematically that will hopefully lead to improved efficiency. But, this type of L is troublesome in that a number of players made NO impact or showed that they are not ready to contribute. Also, Fardaws SHOULD have absolutely dominated this UOP team, especially once Makai Richards drew 2 early fouls, and he didn’t, and there remains a huge drop off in the post when he goes to the bench because Okafor is still a work in progress.
They’re absolutely better though, and this season figures to look nothing like the previous 6, which is good.

The pressure on this squad and staff is huge. So many chips on the table. Patience and progress.

No big deal according to Knowlton because some team nobody cares about like gymnastics or water polo is doing well.

Madsen honeymoon is over.

Meanwhile, AZ upset Duke.
Here we go.
Fun fact: I am from the Big Valley. UOP, back in the 80s, it seems, was quite a contender in MBB. We shall see. But, ouch.
I watched the beginning of the first half. The way UOP was fouling and the way we were getting turnovers. I was confident the cat was in the bag.

I also just wonder how we turned a 10 point lead into a loss? We were doing pretty damn well at that point.
Pretty quickly as well…cue Kevin Spacey Kaiser Soze gif….
BTW, did I ever post here that I once sang with a barbershop quartette in Skokie IL.
Ha! Perfect reference!

Ugh
Haven’t been to a Bears game in Berkeley since old Harmon. Enjoyed atmosphere and scrappy play.
Go Bears!!
I’m sorry, you can’t loose to Pacific at home. That is s bad loss. I guess I need to throw out the high expectations, right now.

I can't watch the games, but looking at the box the ten missed free throws does jump out at you.
