Cal football recruit commits: Luke Ferrelli flips from Stanford, 2025 Carter Jones early verbals
The California Golden Bears get two welcome pieces of recruiting news at a needed position on defense.
Cal had a very tumultuous year on the linebacking front, good and bad.
Jackson Sirmon got hurt midseason, ending his Cal career.
Xavier Carlton battled injuries but gutted through it.
David Reese became a heavy hitter who changed the complexion of the Bears.
True freshman Cade Uluave got pressed into action early and became a very promising talent.
Sergio Allen was not able to make a huge impact we hoped.
Top tackler Kaleb Elarms-Orr is in the portal, checking out Ohio State this week.
UC Davis top tackler Teddye Buchanan joins the Bears via the portal.
Needless to say, Cal needs to have more linebacking talent in place for next year.
They got two very good pieces of news this week.
Stanford linebacker Luke Ferrelli, set to sign in the coming weeks, announced that he will be joining the California Golden Bears.
He told Greg Biggins that the will be an early enrollee and be present for spring practice.
“It has been kind of crazy, I’m still taking it all in but I’m very excited about the decision,” Ferrelli said. “Stanford was kind of a dream school for me but I never really felt a strong connection with the coaches.
“That was part of it but another big thing was I wasn’t going to be able to be an early grad there. That’s pretty important to me and I’ll have that opportunity at Cal so I felt like this was the best move for me.”
…
At Texas A&M’s summer camp, he clocked a 4.56-40, broad jumped 10’7” and vertical jumped 37”.
Ferrelli is a three-star linebacker out of Carlsbad according to 247Sports Composite, holding offers from Stanford, Arizona, Texas A&M, and several Ivy League programs. His athletic measures are off the charts and he’ll be a welcome addition to a brand-new linebacking room.
Additionally, Cal landed a 2025 linebacking commit that has been getting a host of great offers. Irvine (Crean Lutheran) middle linebacker Carter Jones has been coveted by the Bears for over a year, and Jones made the call this weekend. More from Biggins:
“This trip was special because my mom and dad were with me on this visit,” Jones said. “I’ve been to Cal a number of already and it was good for my parents be to able to experience what I’ve experienced on all my visits.
“I’ve been extremely blessed to be able to go and visit Cal several times and every time I’m there I always have a great experience. I have a great relationship with the coaches and it feels like family for me every time I’m there.”
Jones held offers from a dozen Power 5 programs including Florida State, LSU, Michigan State, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Texas A&M, ranking as a top-65 national linebacking prospect and a top-100 California 2025 recruit.
