Cal transfer updates: Mikey Matthews to UCLA, Josiah Martin to Oklahoma
Two Cal wide receivers find new spots for themselves.
For those keeping tabs on former Bears, two former Cal players have found new destinations for themselves, all in spots where they can compete to be wide receiver #1.
Mikey Matthews is joining his former wide receiver coach Burl Toler in Westwood, as he announced his commitment to the UCLA Bruins. Matthews caught 32 passes for 272 yards and a touchdown.
Josiah Martin made a similar holiday announcement, deciding on the Oklahoma Sooners. Martin managed 12 catches for 112 yards this season, plus a touchdown in the LA Bowl.
Nyziah Hunter already made an earlier commitment to Nebraska. Hunter nabbed 40 catches for 578 yards and five touchdowns. That’s a lot of receiving production being lost in the portal.
It seems as if Jonathan Brady, Kyion Grayes and Tobias Merriweather are the earliest contenders to be the top wideouts come fall 2025, pending good health. But the portal can bring all sorts of new talent to contend for the Bears.
Oh, a new quarterback in the room would be nice too.
Toler was a really good recruiter of Wide receivers. Losing him is a blow in getting more good wide outs. Also, he's a Cal alum and so was his father.
For the 3rd consecutive season Cal has lost their top receiver to the transfer portal.
2022 - J. Michael Sturdivant
2023 - Jeremiah Hunter
2024 - Nyziah Hunter
Now losing a starting QB in Mendoza.
Who is responsible for the inability to retain top producers in offense?! Wilcox directly? The revolving door of OCs?
