Cal wide receiver Mason Starling enters the transfer portal
The California Golden Bears probably need at least one more wide receiver for depth.
Mavin Anderson wasn’t the only Cal wide receiver to decide to make a move. Mason Starling also entered the portal as a graduate transfer.
Starling caught 7 passes for 70 yards in 2022, but a season-ending injury sidelined him halfway through the year and made him miss all of 2023. In 2024 he returned early and had some notable performances against Auburn (3 catches, 42 yards) and Florida State (5 catches, 68 yards) before another injury at Pitt ended his year.
That brings the total to five Cal wide receivers who have transferred this winter and spring, matching the running back transfers from the past week. However, Cal has added commitments from Dazmin James (via Arkansas), Jacob De Jesus (via UNLV) and Quaron Adams (South Dakota) this past weekend, so some of the losses have been stemmed by new wide receiver coach Kyle Cefalo.
Cal still has decent enough wide receiver depth returning with Jonathan Brady, Tobias Merriweather, Trond Grizzell, Kyion Grayes, and Trevor Rogers. It should be a pretty wide open battle for who starts this 2025 season.
Best of luck Mason! Thanks for being a Golden Bear!
The Cal offensive exit has become a tragic comedy. If I apply for a graduate program at Cal, I could probably walk on and maybe start. I got my BS in 1979, but as we have learned with the current unsturdy Golden Bear, anything seems possible...
Grad transfer doesn't bother me and I wish him the best. That's just how it goes. We still have quite a bit of talent at WR so this feels more like the new-normal attrition for that position group.
