Cal safety Ryan Yaites is in the transfer portal
The Bears do have good safety depth, but could use every defender they can.
Cal has lost another defender to the transfer portal, this time on the defensive side. Ryan Yaites has decided to move on from the Golden Bears.
Yaites put up 16 tackles and a pass deflection in 2024 as a reserve defensive back, but he wasn’t really able to crack the two deep rotation. In spring practice, Tristan Dunn, Isaiah Crosby, Cam Sidney and Dru Polidore seemed to take the majority of the safety snaps, so it’s possible he wasn’t able to feel confident that he would be able to get significant playing time this year if things progressed.
It’s likely Cal feels confident enough with the above four safeties, but it’d be nice to have a little bit more behind that. Cornerback is a more significant place to upgrade, but don’t be surprised if the Bears to try and find more talent at safety as well.
This transfer is like most before NIL happened. It's because he wasn't going to get much playing time due to his place on the depth chart. On at the other hand, the offense transfers were going to be starters or high on the depth.Maybe because of the new offensive coordinator? Hmm. . .
