Jack Endries transfers to Texas, two other Cal tight ends enter the portal
The Cal offense has more gaps to fill in.
While there was some hope that Cal could hopefully bring Jack Endries back from the transfer portal, those hopes were dashed when he officially signed with the Texas Longhorns. Endries will likely compete to be the starting tight end job as he tries to maximize his 2026 NFL Draft stock.
Both Jaydn Ott and Jack Endries will be competing against each other on opposing sides of the Red River Rivalry. Very weird sentence to type!
Cal has now lost from their 2024 team…
Their top two running backs and top five RBs in the rotation.
Their starting tight end.
Five of their top eight pass-catching wide receivers.
Some rebuilding needs to be done for a few of these units.
Two other tight ends have decided to portal:
Redshirt freshman Camden Jones (who did lose his home in the LA fires)
Incoming JUCO transfer Simon Mapa
This leaves the Cal tight end depth chart as follows
Redshirt sophomore Ben Marshall (five tackles, mostly on special teams)
Redshirt sophomore Mason Mini (five catches for 61 yards last year at Idaho)
Redshirt senior Jeffrey Johnson (two catches for 13 yards)
As you can probably tell, the lack of returning production will be a critical issue to solve. Endries’s departure leaves a huge hole at tight end and it’s likely the Bears will want at least one more versatile portal player.
Look at Avi with this Dragnet-style post. "Just the facts, ma'am, just the facts". I'm sure Avi is wringing his hands along with the rest of us. Having to reload AFTER the spring game is a no-op, and signs of a deeply troubled program. If the next round of realignment happens in the next 2 years, Cal and Furd are in danger of getting the OSU/WSU treatment, and demoted to the Mountain West - or worse, left without a conference. As others have written, CAL will then become a JuCo developing talent for the major schools to poach. That's not a program to root for or invest in, monetarily or emotionally. Lyons and RR need to take drastic action NOW to start the rebuild - let the firings begin...
It’s hard enough supporting a program which knows only how to abuse itself and its supporters. It’s even harder when it’s now clear you can no longer really get attached to any player. There are no heros left.
