Cal men's basketball lands commitment from Western Carolina PG D.J. Campbell
The Bears are nearly halfway toward filling in their new roster.
The California Golden Bears landed their first major pure guard commit in 6’2 205 pound DJ Campbell.
Campbell started 29 games as a sophomore at Western Carolina, bringing him to 45 in his first two years. This year he averaged around 11.7 points per game, 3.8 rebounds, 1.5 assists and shot 42% from three. Based on the lower assist totals, Campbell probably is not expected to be Cal’s primary point guard, and will function more in a combo guard role when Cal goes to three guard lineups. His bigger 200+ pound frame should hopefully allow him to play solid defense as a guard.
This is Cal’s fourth transfer addition in the last few weeks. Campbell joins Lee Dort (Vanderbilt big), BJ Omot (North Dakota forward) and Jeff Nwankwo (top JUCO wing). The Bears still have a lot of holes in their roster they have to fill but they are nearly halfway toward filling in all the necessary spots.
If Cal can start landing some of their top targets, the Bears should hopefully have a deeper team with eight to nine players with a few years of NCAA experience.
Make sure to contribute to the men’s basketball NIL in their fundraising drive (currently at $129k+ raised with a goal of $500k) to help Mark Madsen land the remaining prospects needed to make noise in the ACC!
Welcome to Cal DJ!
We played a lot of minutes without a real PG last year. Even if he doesn't start or play PG primarily, we'll at least have more lineup options.
I keep marveling over the fact that for close to 6 years I completely ignored basketball posts for my very sanity and now there is reason to care again.
