Cal wide receiver Tobias Merriweather transferred to Utah
Cal will have many new wide receiver faces starting in 2025.
Cal has lost a few wide receivers this cycle, and they will lose another one at the end of the spring portal deadline. Tobias Merriwether came from Notre Dame a year ago, and now he will look for another home after entering the transfer portal.
Merriweather was injured in fall camp and missed the first two months of the season. He came back with a six reception, 52 yard, one touchdown performance that was crucial against Wake Forest, but otherwise had a quiet 11 reception season in his one year in Berkeley.
The exodus in the wide receiver room now has seen seven of Cal’s top wide receivers depart. Only Trond Grizzell remains. The others who have left are:
Mason Starling (to San Jose State)
There was hope that Merriweather could be a candidate for the WR1 spot, but his departure opens up another wide open battle at a skill position for the Bears. Cal has gotten replacements for some of these spots who might contend for that spot:
But given the level of depth attrition, you have to figure more wide receiver transfers are on the horizon.
Best to Tobias on wherever he ends up next!
Good luck young man. Bears reload, saddle up and move on! We got battles to fight and a war to win.
This one’s interesting. Utah is hardly a sure-fire better O, and he could have been WR1 here.
Devin Brown is not a P5 QB, tho he figures to start, so he probably saw the writing on the wall, given the power backs added and ground + pound approach that’s hinted.
